When a flower doesn鈥檛 bloom, sometimes you have to fix the environment where it grows. This applies the same to learners. I have been very passionate about making my classroom an asset-based environment. Year by year, I have always incorporated peace and belongingness through my classroom visuals alone. This year, I am adding and embracing more the idea of flexible seating to promote accountability among my students. The flexible seating for sure will entice children, not only because it is inviting, but most importantly because they are eager to learn as how they want. It鈥檚 like chasing a butterfly in the garden. The more you chase it, the lesser chances of catching it. Giving my students the freedom to choose and making them accountable of their prior actions will surely lessen misdemeanors. Along with a checklist and rotation chart, my free choice seating rule would be 鈥淵ou can pick your own seat when you show you are consistently being productive, responsible, respectful and safe鈥. Students, including struggling ones, will be more aware of their actions, thus, honing them to work hard while making their own personal choice. How? The 2 bean bags will definitely go to the calming station, the 4 desk-chairs to the tech station which will give my students the feel of their own space, and the 3 wobble cushions to the carpet station for mind bugging lap-activities. Subsequently, I am also asking for sturdy headphones with microphone and portable speaker to go with our desk-chair station as we are utilizing Google Voice, Flipgrid, Skype, Adobe Sparks with narrations and many other audio-linguistic resources. With these seating materials and audio technology, we are giving our students a chance to prove themselves. Flexibility entails flexible thinking to ignite imagination that will take them everywhere!
