1st graders are very eager to learn new skills. Organization plays an important role in making sure that learning is not interrupted by wasted time looking for tools and materials.
These organizational tools are used to make frequently used tools accessible, will limit transition time, and will help preserve tools for prolonged use. Providing students with a place to keep their tools, such as pencils, glue sticks, and scissors, will allow me to conduct lessons with limited transitions. Bins are a wonderful place to help students keep track of their writing journal, current reading materials, and other tools which they will need access too on a daily basis. Finally, a classroom mailbox is a valuable tool as it provides students a consistent place to turn in important forms and homework which will assist them in developing a sense of responsibility for their work. These tools will help my 1st graders develop the skills that will lead to autonomy.
