We will be extracting gametes from sea urchins and combining them to observe sea urchin eggs literally being fertilized before our eyes. With the filter we can keep the sea urchins alive for the rest of the school year in my salt water aquarium, and if we are lucky, able to observe the sea urchin embryos grow into juveniles.
This lab is many disciplines in one! It is great for my anatomy and physiology class where we study reproduction and for my marine science class where we study echinoderms and learn about fish tank maintenance.
This lab is great because it extends beyond just the day of the lab. They are able to see the daily progression of embryology of sea urchins (which is similar to other vertebrates like us!), as well as observe the adults in the aquarium for the rest of the school year.
