We have enough computers for each student in the class. Due to the transient nature of many of our students and their families, it does not make economic sense to have them all take the Chromebooks home. Most of them have technology at home, but I have a handful of great students who do not. I would like to have a digital library of sorts. Those few could take one home when needed. My goal is to have five Chromebooks but want to start with one and see how it goes.
The students in my class who have little or no technology at home are truly at a disadvantage. For example, they are currently in the process of creating a children's book on events of war. Some of them are interviewing veterans and Holocaust survivors like the one in the picture above and are creating their book in digital form. Realistically, it is mainly students who have computers at home who could accomplish such a feat.
Most of the classes today used Google Classroom or Canvas as a way to communicate if they are missing assignments and a place to turn in their work. Generally, students with poor attendance are the ones who come from economically challenged families. They miss a lot because they have to watch their younger brothers and sisters or have to work. I have many students who would benefit from this and hope to someday have more, but would like to start with one for now!
