The center set includes activities that will reinforce skills such as beginning sounds, middle sounds, ending sounds, syllables, and sound manipulation. These skills make up the basic building blocks of reading development. The center set will help to enhance student learning during our daily literacy centers. In our classroom, students are divided into small groups of students that rotate through center activities. Three of the centers are teacher-directed and one center is independent. The literacy activities provided in this phonemic awareness set would reinforce important skills being taught during teacher-directed centers. The set provides hands-on activities to keep students engaged in their work. Each center activity contains materials that are color coded for students to work independently within the group. Also included in the activity set is a double sided instruction chart to keep students focused on the task at hand. The instruction chart includes easy to follow pictures so that students who cannot yet read, are still able to understand the directions.
Working independently is a skill that students will need to develop for success in the future. An activity set such as this will provide students the opportunity to work independently, while developing their phonemic awareness skills. The center set will be available for use among the kindergarten team.
