This is my first year teaching and I am committed to providing my students with flexible seating options. Flexible seating allows students to take charge of their learning and make the choices that work best for them. The photo for this project shows the classroom as I received it. I have already made significant purchases with my own money from thrift stores, discount stores, and have re- purposed my own furniture to make my classroom a more welcoming space. Making sure students are comfortable is an essential component in motivating them. In my time student/substitute teaching I have noticed amazing differences in my students when they are given a choice in their seating.
Ask yourself if you would do your most creative, engaged, and effective work sitting at a typical student desk and chair for 7 hours a day?
The products that I have selected will help my students by giving them additional seating options to make more effective learning choices. The rug and bean bag will be used with the low tables and pillows that I have purchased to give students a comfortable seating option near floor. Standing desks have been a craze in office spaces, with good reason. Many students simply work better when they are able to stand. The standing desks will help students who prefer not to sit to achieve their full potential. The lights are to replace the harsh institutional lighting and give us a more relaxed environment conducive to exceptional learning.
I have seen how choice can positively affect my students work and demeanor. I hope to enter into my first school year with a classroom that gives every student the best opportunity to reach the true height of their potential.
