My Latin II students spend several chapters reading about the ancient city of Alexandria where the art of glassmaking thrived.
After studying the ancient art of glassmaking, my Latin students will try their hand at making a "millefiori" bowl using polymer clay. Millefiori means "a thousand flowers" and was an ancient technique in which cut pieces of glass were fused together to make a floral pattern. To mimic this, students will select three colors of clay to make multicolored "snakes" which will then be rolled and cut into discs. These discs will be applied to the metal bowls, pressed together and baked to result in a permanent bowl they can take home with them. A piece of the ancient world come alive for them!
