Students can use these tablets to record themselves or their partner reading. This process allows them to hear what fluency sounds like and helps them to learn unfamiliar words. We also use them to create videos of writing presentations. Students will practice sight words, letter fluency, counting and basic math facts. My second language learners use tablets to help with language acquisition as we are able to provide them with both pictures, words, and voice recordings of what new words are.
Language acquisition is such a difficult task for students who are new to the country. Any tool that I can use to aid in this acquisition is a bonus in our classroom. Having a tool that will help my students with communicating their needs and wants is paramount to their success in the classroom. Most children today are more adept with tablets and technology than the adults are. This is the world they live in and the way they communicate. To best reach all my students I need to be able to communicate with them on common ground. A tablet provides multiple apps and activities that help the students learn their second language.
