In the past ten plus years, I have been limited to teacher demonstrations on static charge using "real" lab equipment. Balloons and salt to show charges are fun, but eighth graders need to move onto the next step using lab equipment when learning about induction and conduction.
By using various devices and ways to create static charges, students can explore the temporary and permanent nature of charges. It's a challenging topic as students are introduced to invisible forces.
