The materials I am requesting will support my students' reading and writing skills. The students will use these books as anchor texts to complete reading and writing activities in a special after school program called Story Stretchers. During the hour long program held three times a year, the students and their parents will engage in reading and writing activities using these books. Each writing will support a different genre of writing including narratives, opinion and expository pieces. The families will also engage in creating a craft and snack that supports some aspect of the book they have read.
Engaging and supporting parents and students in reading activities that are fun and entertaining will support my novice readers' skill development and desire to read. Providing my students with quality literature by supplying them with their own take home book at each session will allow by students to read these engaging books over and over again, building reading skills through repetition.
