I have been a teacher for 22 years and have always tried to do my best to keep up with the current practices in education. More recently, teachers are connecting in online communities to share ideas and help each other understand recently adopted national Next Generation Science Standards. I also have noticed when I attend district meetings for development and other professional learning sessions, everyone has a laptop which they can follow along with presenters and access discussed resources in real time. I feel like the dinosaur who is out of the loop.
My school does not have laptops teachers can use in professional development, and I increasingly feel I am not getting the most out of these sessions as my peers are.
Last year when I attended the National Science Teacher Association Conference, I also learned about webinars which are sessions I can access online that provide instruction on different topics. I also learned about online learning communities where teachers post questions and can get help from other teachers. I’d like the laptop to allow me to tap into these resources and connect with my colleagues in this new age of technology. The laptop will help me stay up to date for my students so I can continue to bring them the best instruction.
