For years, I have been attended book fairs, combed through book stores and thrift shops, and looked for deals online in order to build a collection of books that speaks to the young adults in my classroom. It was my goal last year to really diversify my library, so I asked everyone to donate a book from an author of color as a birthday gift. The people in my community overwhelmed me with support! So much so that I have more books than I know what to do with. Unfortunately, my school is limited on how many bookcases they are allowed to give each teacher, and I have reached my max. So now, I am asking the community for help once again.
Carlos MarÃa DomÃnguez once said, "To build up a library is to create a life; it’s never just a random collection of books." New bookshelves be the last step of bringing my library to life! Having these bookshelves would really give my students an opportunity to see the entire selection when they enter my classroom. My books will be sorted by genre, and having all the books displayed will help with the organization. We start off class everyday with ten minutes worth of reading, and a welcoming classroom library will make the students want to read for even more!
