Bell Elementary is a learning community of nearly 550 students in Pre-school through Grade 5. Students in our learning community come from diverse backgrounds: nearly half of our students are Causian (54%), 18% are Lantinx, 14% are Asian-American, and 5% are African-American. Many receive special services: 14% receive English Langiage Learner services, 17% receive free/reduced lunches, and 16% receive special education/disability services. Teaching staff at Bell are working hard to facilitate learning, but students continue to struggle to meet grade-level learning standards (74% in ELA and 66% in Math). Particularly in ELA, student growth rates fluctuate significantly (61% last year, but 53% this year). A critical challenge to sustained increases in learning growth is the lack of a positive reading culture, in part due to a library collection that has been depleted of current and engaging reading materials.
