Holocaust survivor stories lead to deep discussions of the power of individual people, the function of hope and hopelessness in times of trial, and serve as preventative medicine against persecution of all people.
Art Spiegelman's creative use of personified animal characters demonstrates the dehumanization of the Jewish people throughout the Holocaust. I plan to teach close reading of words, symbols, colors, space, and images using the Maus collection of graphic novels and Night by Elie Wiesel with my sophomore students. The purpose of this unit is to develop empathy and study the actions and beliefs of people in the midst of desperate situations.
