Read alouds are the keystone of our school day, whether that be in person or remotely. We use picture books to not only teach reading skills, but more importantly explore themes like empowerment, sharing, empathy, honesty and perseverance.
All of my students deserve to see someone like them in a book. Many picture books do not put diverse characters in the center of the story. I would like to grow my collection of children's books to include many more diverse titles. Our students face the additional challenge of not having access to a school library, and many families are unable to make use of the local libraries.
