Books allow you to travel without moving your feet. Illiteracy has reached epidemic proportions in our country. The lack of access to books is a key contributor to the never-ending cycle of educational disadvantage. Two hundred and eighty young men receive an education at my institution. The student population is made up of 0% female students and 100% male students. We service students in grades 6-12. Over 58% of the school population is economically disadvantaged students. I surveyed the student body and over 78% said they would read more if they had access to reading material.
I am requesting a wide variety of books that will engage the young men at our school. It is my mission to ensure every student has access to reading materials at school and to take home to read at their leisure. It is vital for educators to support our students' reading to learn as an essential part of their lives.
Students who have access to equitable reading material perform better academically. This school library is critically important. It increases the chances that students are more likely to be frequent readers. The books and furniture requested will allow me to create a reader friendly environment. The data and research are clear – students who have access to print reading materials have better literacy outcomes.
