Putting a novel into a students hands and offering the gift of an interactive read aloud every day, fosters a true love for reading. Watching students learn about relationships and themes in writing is truly amazing. My students will make authentic connections as we read each of Kate DiCamillo’s novels that deal with friendship, hardships, and overall love for one another. Our reading standards follow along nicely with DiCamillo’s fictional pieces, so I supplement our curriculum to enhance the experience of authentic reading. Reading aloud to my students allows for ALL of my students to engage in comprehension strategies as I model the process for them. No matter the reading level of my varying exceptionalities classroom, we all become equal with the text in front of us and our ears listening to the words being read to us.
