These books will help continue to make my classroom library a place that my students enjoy, to allow me to carry on our rich, higher-level discussions and to read on the carpet to them. With remote learning, I will use picture books as a way to provide them with access to literature in short bursts and build social emotional connection to the folks they see who may represent them or who may represent someone different from them. All of these books have been chosen with my students and their vast variety of experiences and interests in mind.
With these new books, my students will be able to choose from stories that mirror their own or provide an opportunity to see a window into the lives and cultures of others, especially necessary in our isolated, divisive time on the brink of change.
