This pandemic has quickly changed the way speech and language therapy looks. Our students are required to wear a mask at all times. This is a problem for students working on their speech sounds (because they can't see our mouths or their own in a mirror), students who are working on pragmatic goals (e.g., social skills) because so many non-verbal communication is shown with your mouth, as well as students who are deaf and hard of hearing who rely on lip reading.
Clear masks will allow students to see mouths for sounds/words, emotions, and increase understanding for those deaf and hard of hearing students who rely on lip reading. We also need activities that are safe and do not need to be shared with other students. Kinetic sand in individual plastic containers, plastic legos, books, markers and paper are all materials that can be used during therapy while still meeting safety guidelines.
