Many of my students play on broken, chipped, cracked, and some even dare to play on moldy reeds. It breaks my heart to see so many students playing an instrument with defective reeds. Reeds are essential in making sounds on a clarinet, bass clarinet, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, and baritone saxophone. Students that play on bad reeds tend to get squeaks, honks, or no sound at all. These same students also tend to blame themselves for the terrible noises they make without realizing it is their instrument or reed, which leads to lower self-confidence and associating their instruments with negativity and unfulfillment. Many of our students struggle to afford reeds, so I have fundraised to help give some reeds to students in need, but this is not enough. Unfortunately, reeds go by quickly and the cost for each reed adds up. I work in a low-income community where every dollar counts. Many of my students work part-time jobs starting at a young age. Those that work part-time jobs eventually come up with the money for a new reed every now and then, but both the student and I know that one reed is not enough. Please help me give reeds to students at no cost. This will help build confidence in our young students, as well as bring joy and peace of mind to receive an essential band item without the stress of coming up with the money.
