As an English teacher, one of the best moments is when a young person finds a book they connect with. My class library is a window to the multiverse; many worlds exist within these shelves. This connection to stories transcends language, and nationality. This year I have multiple students who are learning to read and speak English. Their eyes widened when they saw my class library, and they excitedly asked if any of the books were in Spanish. The books in this project will be very well loved and much appreciated; they represent universal and powerful stories, and characters who have faced trials and succeeded, and learned to get up again when they stumble.
All students want to engage with others about topics and issues that matter in our world today. One of the most important parts of education is facilitating that conversation to create a space where everyone feels heard and can grow. Sometimes that conversation is with peers who can converse in real-time, and sometimes it's more about creating something from a personal perspective and sharing the final product with others. A set of headphones with microphones will allow my students to interact with others, such as their peers learning at home, in meaningful and productive ways. They can also use these as they create their own digital creative projects.
