Deaf and Hard of Hearing students that are mainstreamed into the regular education setting have to work twice as hard as their hearing classmates either because they need to watch an interpreter while trying to take notes or because they have to put more focus on connecting what information they can hear to create meaning from that. Either way, they tend to miss about half of the information their hearing peers receive. This is why it is so important that deaf students receive as much direct instruction in a DHH setting. This is also why I feel it is important to reward them for all the hard work they demonstrate in their mainstreamed classes. Knowing they are “working” towards getting their favorite snacks makes it a little more bearable in those hearing (and noisy) classrooms.
