I call this “Project Infinity”, because with reading, writing, and math, their opportunities and possibilities for community and personal success is infinite. I would love for my children to read one, new, short book a week, write what they learned from that book in a journal, read it aloud to the class for a group discussion and then compose a book report using a proven and highly educational rubric. I would love for my children to work on solving math equations, practice language arts, discover science, and empower themselves with social studies by utilizing the power of modern educational software solutions. We need educational software such as “IXL” and a slew of other online learning solutions that SSIS does has licenses to use. The issue: we lack access to these educational platforms from within our classrooms. It is like owning a Porsche with no wheels. Fact: Without computer tablets my students are metaphorically chained to textbooks and copy machine paper excerpts taken from books. Paper books are wildly expensive and environmentally unfriendly, although this is not a problem my students are experiencing because we cannot afford paper books. However, I can afford to provide them with “E-Books” every week out of my salary. I am not asking you to support my class alone, I am asking for you to assist me in supporting these mesmerizing fourth graders. We can work together on Project Infinity and open the world up to these students. Together, you and I can gift these little ones, infinite possibilities, in the palms of their hands.
