I tend to think of flexible seating like a coffee shop. When you walk into a coffee shop, such as Starbucks, it is soothing. People are calm, happy, and comfortable. They have been able to sit in various places of their choosing, music is playing, and the ambiance has a sense of calm. Flexible seating, in my opinion, should be the same.
It is my goal to supply my classroom with many varied options for my students, and my latest project is to provide a standing desk that would allow space for two students. Some children like to stand while working, and this will give one more opportunity for unique learners to be successful in a new and innovative way.
Everything done in modern classrooms should be based on research and best practices for our students. Redesigning my classroom was not any different. I’ve found that some of the immediate benefits of flexible seating to be things such as the students seeming happier, more focused, and when they are working independently they are more engaged in their learning. The students take more ownership in the classroom and are more inclined to help keep the room clean and want to be more invested in their own learning. It is amazing the residual effects that follow after simply allowing the students to feel more comfortable in their learning space.
