Thanhha Lai, the author of Inside Out & Back Again, will give students insight into what it's like to be an author. She will provide slides and information about her life, which led her to the telling of her own story through a fictional character. Most importantly, students will have the opportunity to ask questions, which I've seen in other author visits they truly enjoy.
In addition to reading the free-verse novel this semester, students also had the chance to write in free-verse poetry themselves, so this visit will give them a window into what it's like to make writing your story through poetry a career.
This visit will be an truly eye-opening experience for students who themselves have also made harrowing journeys to the United States and experienced similar challenges upon arrival to the author/main character. I believe the visit will be inspiring to them to see what true success they can achieve by simply amplifying their voices in meaningful ways to tell their own stories.
