At least 80% of my students are classified as economically disadvantaged. Many of them have limited access to 21st-century technology at home. Unfortunately, our classroom technology is limited to a projector and a teacher desktop. There are only two computer labs on campus, and we are lucky to get one lab day a month. This leaves my students with even fewer opportunities for hands-on experience using technology for research and writing in our language arts class.
Routinely each week, we work in small, collaborative groups. My goal is for at least one group each day to use the tablets for enhancing their research skills as well as interactive remediation for standards we have yet to master. Many of my students struggle with using technology for educational purposes and are intimidated by it. By having weekly access to a set of classroom tablets, I hope to build their confidence in using the technology independently and effectively.
