In high school level math, there are always problems that involve students needing to graph information or be able to read information off a coordinate plane. Students get intimidated by using a coordinate plane. During units that are "off the grid", students can use the other side to solve problems and collaborate with their peers. By using a whiteboard, it lowers the risk involved and allows students to feel more comfortable engaging with the content. I specifically work with students who have learning disabilities in the areas of reading and math, ADHD/ADD, etc. That can make math even more intimidating.
