So many students are having big feelings right now. My students are dealing with the usual everyday challenges that come with learning math, reading, writing, & social skills, while also navigating the uncertainty, trauma, and fear of the last year dealing with Covid-19 and subsequent remote learning, lost jobs, housing instability, etc. Now more than ever, kids are dis-regulated and unable to de-escalate after they are triggered or have a crisis.
Calming tools will quiet their bodies and minds to allow for learning.
These materials will be used to create about 48 classroom, specialist, and office calming boxes. Each box will contain a variety of safe, quiet, and sensory-rich tools that will help the children calm their bodies in a designated space, including a hand-made sensory bottle, squishy toys, Play-Doh, blocks, slime, and fidgets. Using the boxes will allow any K-5 student who is having a hard time focusing and engaging in learning the opportunity to take a quick break from a learning activity or problem to get centered and regulated (in control of their body and brain). The student then will be able to problem-solve with an adult or return to the learning.
