Our plant study will further students' understanding of plants as food. Students will be able to learn about plants used for produce. They will be a part of each step in the process of growing their own vegetables. Students will be allowed to also eat some of the food they harvest. Additional produce will be shared with the school community. The plant study will also emphasize the character-building blocks of our school, such as work, responsibility, and helpfulness.
A hydroponic system in the classroom would allow students to understand what farming can mean to them. Alaska is limited in its growing season due to a lack of sunlight and cold temperatures. The type of produce that can be grown is very restricted. The hydroponic system will allow for different varieties of produce. Students will have a deeper connection to their food and nature. Students are more likely to try fresh produce that they have grown. This larger connection to their food has the potential to make a lifelong impact on their dietary habits.
