This project was partially developed by Haley Pendergast, an OT graduate student from Sacred Heart University, who is currently completing her pediatric fieldwork placement in the Stamford public school system. Together we recognized the need for OT equipment for the OT/PT room at the middle school. As school budgets don't always allow for materials and equipment required, we have decided to reach out to other channels for financial assistance. Your donations will provide our students with some much-needed essentials for our therapeutic practices.
My role as an occupational therapist in the school setting is to improve student independence and success with academic tasks. Many of the students I see at Rippowam Middle School present with low muscle tone, sensory difficulties, and challenges in motor planning (i.e., the ability to think of and execute movements to perform an activity). These challenges can influence their performance in school from completing jumping jacks in gym class to handwriting tasks in the classroom.
The materials I have put on this platform will help the children overcome many of these difficulties in a fun and engaging way during their time in OT. For instance, the balance beam will challenge the students' balance and coordination whereas the swings will promote sensory input to the vestibular system. Wikki Stix and Theraputty will help the children increase their hand/finger strength needed to complete fine motor tasks in the classroom such as buttoning up a jacket or using a paintbrush in art class. Pencil grips and universal cuffs will promote proper grasps on writing and feeding utensils respectively. Duck tape sheets will allow me to create sensory pathways for movement breaks to increase attention to tasks.
If you have any questions about how I will utilize a specific item in my treatment sessions, feel free to contact me!
