Students at our elementary school love to have the opportunity to participate in the Sunshine State Young Readers Award and Sunshine State Young Readers Award Jr. incentive programs! These programs help to spark a love of reading for our K-5th grade students. The books that I'm requesting are all included in the 2021-2022 lists that was just released on April 30th. Having multiple copies of these books for all 470 students within our school to checkout is key to the success of these programs.
Every student in our school is enticed by these specially selected books, even our struggling readers! Once students choose to read one of these titles and demonstrate their comprehension of the text, they are awarded with a special book charm that they proudly wear on their Sunshine State Young Readers Award necklace. This gets them motivated to read more books from the list and a love of reading ensues. Many students go on to read all 15 books on their grade level list and collect a charm for each one. They are also awarded with a special t-shirt for this great accomplishment. The participation in this program grows year after year and these books fly off our library shelves.
The pandemic led to a large loss of library books from our collection because students were suddenly shifted from in school to distance learning last year. The huge amount of time the students were out of school caused many books to be lost and damaged. Our library collection was reduced by several hundred books and part of our normal budget is needed to replace these books. So, funds are very limited. If I receive this gift from Ðǿմ«Ã½, it will go a long way towards helping me enhance our library collection with books kids love!
