My students are from a variety of places, backgrounds, religions, and cultures, and our literature should reflect that. The collection of short stories -The Thing Around Your Neck - from Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie gives my students literature written by a young Nigerian-American woman in the 21st century. The stories are modern and reflect the modern world. The characters are as diverse as the students in our school. Rather than relying on the old texts written more than a hundred years ago that I read in school, I want my students to connect with stories that represent them.
