I am a second year speech-language pathologist working in the most diverse school district in Washington state. After finishing my first year in school closures due to COVID-19, teaching remotely for my entire second year of work, I am looking forward to spending my third year in-person with students. However, I am in need of help to diversify my physical materials, including my library.
My colleagues and I are committed to anti-racism, social justice, and equity, and I want my materials to reflect this commitment. My students deserve books that not only represent their own experiences and cultures, but the experiences and cultures of others. Books should not only be mirrors, but sliding glass doors to other worlds. I have learned and attended workshops on best practices for anti-racism and honoring diversity, and I have selected materials that come recommended to me from these conferences.
