The goal of this project is to create a classroom library that is a safe place for my students to inspire their curiosity about the world and promote equality. I want to provide an abundance of diverse books to ensure that every student in my class feels visible. In addition to the variety of books, I will support this work by teaching students to evaluate texts not solely on the traditional standards of story elements and author’s craft but to consider who is in the texts, and what implicit and explicit biases are either supported or dispelled through these characters. The materials selected are intentional and purposeful and will make a difference in the lessons I am able to produce. For example, lessons surrounding real world issues that deal with American Elections, Women in Science, Climate Change, Characters Who Stay True to Themselves, Anti-Bullying, and Human Rights.
