Students entering my Advanced Placement Language course are all provided a copy of Eric Schlosser's Fast Food Nation for their summer reading to jump start the course. This title offers them a great entry point for our study of rhetoric, crafting of language and argument, as well as the vast network of interconnected issues that shape our culture, choices, and challenges.
However, our limited budget leads to limited options, and our students are diverse with wide-ranging backgrounds and interests that I want to leverage for their own best learning outcomes. From the foundation of our shared summer reading, I want them to embrace other complex issues and work collaboratively in book clubs to dig into another book, critically examine the author's argument, identify connections across books and to current events to really help make them well-informed citizens, collaborative team members, and critical thinkers regarding complex issues that continue to challenge our society and to which we will be looking to these future leaders to help us navigate.
I firmly believe in choice and voice in the classroom. Adding these titles to the options for student book clubs will enrich the experience for all students as it offers them more choice to pursue what interests them as we all travel the path together to build our skills and best utilize the voice and talent of each individual. In addition, these titles can be shared with other groups, expanding the number of impacted students tremendously and creating a positive ripple effect of learning.
