Flexible seating gives students the option to exercise their rights to accommodations in the classroom. By allowing students to use flexible seating, I will be helping to enrich learning for all. This is a fitting way to adjust the classroom to the individual needs of students while maintaining learning expectations. The bulk of my students love to move around during class and seem to do their best thinking outside of their desks.
Students feel empowered by having choice and control over their environment. The "year of COVID" was my very first year in the classroom, so I did not have many options when it came to having alternative means of seating. But, I allowed my students to sit on the floor beside or in front of their desks throughout the day, and you would be amazed at the difference it made! Flexible seating improves focus and engagement in the classroom setting, which is exactly what the students need.
