The students within my classroom are building essential academic, vocational, daily-living, and leisure-time skills that will help them access their world and live as independently as possible when they reach adulthood. To build these skills, I am choosing to integrate the Work Boxes program from PCI Educational publishing into my classroom.
Work Boxes is a series of functional activities designed for secondary students with significant support needs. Progress monitoring data is collected as students work through the boxes - this data is used to track students progress toward their IEP goals.
There are 60 work boxes in all which, once assembled, will last for years. The start-up cost may be high, but this resource will make an incredible impact on my students for years to come.
Example Workbox tasks:
Workbox 1B:
1. Place 1 salt, 1 pepper, 1 creamer, 1 stirrer, 1 napkin, 1 knife, 1 fork, and 1 spoon in a plastic bag.
2. Seal the plastic bag.
Work until you have filled all the plastic bags or until the time you have to do this job is over. If you finish early, count the number of plastic bags you have filled.
(Data is taken on how many bags were correctly filled and how long it took the student to complete the task.)
