Books are life. They represent our values and shared experiences, but they also reflect a unique linguistic and cultural perspective that can be valuable for students learning another language or studying another culture. The problem is that most authentic, target-language books are too difficult for Spanish learners.
I want to provide my students with a classroom library full of novels in Spanish that they can actually read. This will promote both second language literacy as well as cultural competence, as many of the novels I have selected incorporate cultural elements specific to Spanish-speaking countries. With this library in place, I plan to implement a Free Voluntary Reading program as well as use novels to explore cultural topics with my students. I hope that providing novels on a range of topics will encourage even my most reluctant readers to engage and explore.
