When students walk into my classroom, my goal is to give them a meaningful learning experience each day. This often includes (but is not limited to) gallery walks, simulations, group work, and games. In my classroom, students investigate what they are learning, question the content, and create inquiry of their own to really think about why they are learning each concept. Having resources in the classroom that can engage students in meaningful learning experiences is not only fun for students, but also strengthens their desire to learn and confidence in the classroom. Hands-on learning experiences allow students to learn through trial and error, inquiry, and experience.
The board game, Catan, will allow my students to experience how civilizations grow and succeed. Students will be able to visualize the growth of a civilization through the hands-on experience of playing the board game. Catan will also give students the opportunity to work together in groups, giving them the social interaction that will strengthen their collaborative skills.
I've seen how engaged and excited students are about learning when they have the opportunity to really dive into the learning through a meaningful experience. This not only helps them learn the content effectively- it also motivates students to keep learning and to love learning.
