My goal is to get my students outdoors observing wildlife; more specifically, waterfowl in the wetlands around Colorado. I have a very diverse group of students in grades 4-6 who are passionate about preserving wetland areas in the Colorado Springs area. We will be spending several days out in nature near bogs, marshes, lakes, ponds, and rivers observing waterfowl that frequent the area.
The students will be learning about waterfowl behavior by observing various species with their binoculars. After careful and close observations with the binoculars, the students will record waterfowl observations in their nature notebooks. They will use these observations from their journals to create a piece of artwork focusing on one specific species of waterfowl in its habitat for the annual Jr. Federal Duck Stamp Contest. This is a nationwide art contest that helps raise the awareness of wetland conservation for students in grades k-12. It is a wonderful way to inspire students to spend time in the outdoors where they can gain an appreciation for nature and wildlife.
