I am trying to provide my richly diverse 6th graders with a classroom library that mirrors their worlds. A world where they can see characters and themes that reflect their identities and experiences.
It is vital that students be exposed to stories with characters that are different from them; to open windows into the lives, customs, and beliefs of others. As they continue to grow into the individuals they were meant to be, they will be able to work with all different types of people.
The books will be traveling with students from the classrooms to their homes. They can share what they are reading with their families and reinforce the school/home connection.
