First grade is when most kids decide to either love reading or hate it the rest of their life. As we all know reading determines success for all areas of life. For me this life long love was created because of a train. When I was in first grade I was an advance reader but I didn't really care to read. Until we got a train in the library. It was just large wooden boxes that where decorated like a train. I fell in love with that train and wanted to go every day to read in it.
Please! Help me create a space where kids not only want to read but are begging to read. Help me cultivating a life long love for reading. I was an advance reader, so I didn't even have an issues with reading itself. Now think of a not so good reader. They will use any excuse not to read. Therefore, I would try anything to encourage them to read even by putting a boat in my classroom. Our classroom theme is nautical and I think putting a boat in our reading reef (our classroom library area) would encourage and get every kid to want to read.
