This year many of our students are coping with what's being called the dual pandemic. In addition to the personal, educational and social loss associated with Covid, the gun violence in Philadelphia is at an all time high. Our students are losing classmates and loved ones on a daily basis. The toll this trauma is taking on them exceeds what we are able to manage in a school, but we can try.
As a School Social Worker I hope to give all students a safe space to express their emotions and learn some techniques and skills they will need to move forward from a myriad of losses.
My students will create calming jars in our grief/loss groups to help them utilize healthy outlets to deal with their grief while honoring their loved ones memory. Students will also make personalized calming stones that they can carry with them throughout the day. They can use the stones when they feel anxious, or overcome with emotion during class.
