Flexible seating is a "newer" concept in classrooms. It has been said that when students are able to wobble, move and fidget; they are able to be more alert and focused during lessons. I completely believe this theory/fact. I normally have at least two to five students with exceptionalities in my room. These exceptionalities may include but are not limited to autism, developmental delayed and ADHD.
As a previous special education paraprofessional and someone who has a high understanding of students with exceptionalities, I find it very critical to meet the needs of each student in order to efficiently teach them. Studies have shown that the flexible seating can increase students core strengths along with their blood flow and the oxygen to their brain. I have personally seen where students have had a higher rate of academic progress when they were able to be comfortable.
