My students are a diverse group of newcomers to the United States. They speak a variety of languages: French, Spanish, Portuguese, Mam, Akateko, Haitian Creole, and Kʼicheʼ. Due to their late arrivals in the US schooling system, the complexity of reaching the goals set by our government can be daunting, but every day offers tremendous opportunity for each one of them. Attempting to meet each student at their level and accelerate their learning from the most foundational levels, we teach different content at different levels, validate culture, and seek to offer assistance to all that enter.
