Over a decade ago, our school was underwent a transformation from a middle school to middle/elementary school for grades 4-8. Unfortunately for our younger students, the furniture found in most elementary classrooms didn't follow. Many of my student's feet dangle from their desk chairs each day. This is clearly an uncomfortable position for them as they are constantly sitting on their feet, pulling their feet up onto the chair, squirming, or looking for a reason to get up.
This lack of comfort also means a lack of focus on what truly matters, learning. Many of my students deal with struggle and discomfort in their homes. They work so unbelievably hard, every day, trying to beat the odds. Something as simple as the ability to sit in a comfortable, supported position should not hinder their academic success.
