Relating characters to our own world will create meaningful conversations and allow students to appreciate each other, yet feel a strong sense of pride when reflecting on their own background and culture. We come from a diverse community and can learn from others as we discuss the character's issues and solutions.
With all of the racial tensions in the world today, reading these books and experiencing issues through various characters will help students develop a positive identity and embrace diversity. Allowing a safe and encouraging environment for students to express personal feelings as they reflect on learning from books and hearing other's perspectives will create a great appreciation for all cultures.
Our district does not have a curriculum in place to support Social Justice standards, but through literature we can bring to life some of these important issues that children must learn from in order to become successful members of society. These books will open up an abundance of opportunities for students to listen to, learn from, and reflect on. Embracing diversity and developing a love for culture through literature will be the most efficient and effective way to support our students.
