My 7th and 8th grade students rarely have the opportunity to visit museums or historic sites. They live in a small, rural community and come from strong, proud families. It's a desert environment where humans co-exist with rattlesnakes, coyotes, scorpions, and the desert heat. There isn't a gas station let alone a bookstore. Picture one of those old western movies with the dust and tumbleweeds. That's us.
While there are a lot of valuable lessons to be learned in the desert, you can understand why we rely on books, technology, and guest speakers to provide our kids with a link to the vast world beyond our cactus kingdom.
