My students live in an urban setting where they are faced with many challenges in their personal lives. Our school is a small, neighborhood, city school where 100% of our students receive free lunch. Although my students face challenges in their personal lives they are thriving in my reading class. They have expressed an interest in improving their reading skills and a special interest in nonfiction. They are always asking questions about the world that we live in and have shown a special interest in all of the nonfiction texts that we have read up to this point. They are lively and curious, yet respectful and attentive. They are helpful, caring and polite and they deserve to have access to quality nonfiction that will set their curiosity on fire.
