I teach Humanities to a group of kind, curious, and tenacious young people from Oakland, California. Our classroom is guided by the saying, "Know History, Know Self. No History, No Self," and as such we use the written word to dig deeper into the stories and struggles at the root of our society and our own identities. Students are supported in building a critical lens through which to read and analyze texts from multiple genres, perspectives, and time periods. We use these texts to ground us in class-wide discussions around historical and sociological controversies, and to build strong written arguments. And of course, we always make time for laughter and celebration. In supporting my classroom, you are providing students with materials that will feed their curiosity and support their journey as life-long learners and leaders.
